Really, Is It That Important?

I think that as a species, humans need to start to reevaluate there interests.

I will admit that my knowledge on soccer as a sport is not expansive. The United States is not interested at large in the sport. For the rest of the world, this sport is known as football and not soccer. There is no doubt though that Cristiano Ronaldo is an awesome soccer player. He won FIFA World Player of the year in 2008. The man is an all out stud.

Real Madrid offered Manchester United 131 million dollars (in Euros its less, damn this economy) for the rights to negotiate with Ronaldo. This is like the NBA New York Knicks paying the Cleveland Caveliers, 131 million dollars for the right to talk to Lebron James. Its and astronomical amount, considering that there is a slight possibility that he chooses not to sign with him.

In a peaceful and prosperous world, this offer does not seem like a bad idea. However, the dollar amount attributed to paying athletes is disproportional to the living conditions of many people in the world. Athletes deserve fame. They work hard for it. They shine in activities of human leisure. As a whole sports is something we do, whether it is the gladiator fights in Rome, or the shooting games of the Mayans. Human beings have always looked out into games. Alex Rodriguez is another example of when sports goes bad. He is currently receiving a 252 million dollar contract to play baseball (no rings, he has yet to earn it).

Look sports is great for people, but there should be no reason why it should cost this high. The athletes that play sports should continue to seek higher contracts if teams are willing to pay that much for them. A large part of athletes earn there way into wealth, so really, they do not deserve too much blame for these numbers.

What should we focus on as a species? Well, there are social issues and issues of power. People are fighting in wars for various causes as well as starving because they were not given the opportunity to earn a life. If people can be come proactive and work towards prosperity, there is no reason why humans cannot reach the Jetson's model of the future we have been seeking (even though that is flawed).
