Cory Gunz vs. Big Pun

So you are probably going to write this off and say no, there is no way in the world that Cory Gunz could ever be mentioned as a worthy adversary of Big Pun. Rightly so Big Pun was one of the most technical rappers to ever rap. He represented his culture, and The Bronx to the fullest extent. Big Pun is a legend and an all time great.

Big Pun's style of rhyming is like the best graffiti. Its street, you stare at it and know that its art but still do not know why. At his best its hard to understand all at first. So you listen harder, listen to his words, and then it all makes sense. Its extremely detailed. At first listen, you pick most of what he says, and you like it, its interesting. Then at the next listen, you pick more things up that you did not before. This is in general to all good music (all genres). Listening to Pun is like getting mushed in the head repeatedly. Its a constant attack on the your ear as a listener. Even in his most commercial hit, "Still Not a Player" he stayed true to his rhyme style and was detailed. Its hip hop that is missed in this "Hip Hop is Dead" era.

Cory Gunz is from the Bronx. He's new hip hop and is looking to explode onto the rap scene. He grew up into hip hop. His father is Peter Gunz who teamed up with Lord Tariq for the 1997 hit Deja Vu. He was mentioned in XXL as a part of their next 10 list. A list that features the next 10 rappers who are set to shape 2009. From that list, several rappers have achieved commercial success including Asher Roth and Charles Hamilton.

Cory Gunz is a stand out for his lyrical potential. He is super detailed as Pun was and spits a flash fire pace that was trademark of Pun. Cory Gunz is 2009.

In these types of disputes, it is hard to give the new guy a shot. The rapper who came first was the one that normally tips the scale as the better MC. Their legend even intensifies after a death. Big Pun is an all time great. He was the first Latino rapper to go platinum and sell a million records. He represented the Bronx and New York Puerto Ricans. He is loved as a rapper. He was the first flash fire MC.

Lyrically, though Cory Gunz can keep up. He is a new age 2009 Big Pun in terms of flow. He raps with super detailed fast pace that Pun made famous. He has a long way to go, but if he maintains integrity in his rhymes then one day he might surpass Big Pun.

Here is his latest video for a collaboration he made with DJ Drama. The song though is okay, the hook echos the old DMX classic hit, "Ruff Ryders Anthem" (miss those days). It does sound like Mike Shinoda hit in terms of the beat and flow. Video is an overall 7 out of 10.
