Review: Vol. 1 Soul vs. Swagger

Juan Alvarez calls himself WaMoo Papez. A third generation hip hop listener/ current college student experimenting with his creative to make music. He might just be another new young hip hop producer looking to acquire the fortune attributed with hip hop. But his sound is not. His inspirations are amongst hip hop elite, the late great J Dilla, the hip hop jazz masters The Roots, and others.

Cut to the chase. How does this EP sound? Well, you take a mix of soulful samples, splash in the gravitating affect of MF Doom's music, and place a basic but clever hitting drumkit and you get this EP. There are low points like the intro track No More Dembows. In this track it has so many sounds put together, it has no sound. It plays as if he was just putting together random sounds. Another lowpoint is "Love." that track just did not hit hard. It sounds put together awkward.

High Points. Many. There is "Alternative Synthpop" which literally sounds backwards but has a mind-numbing effect. "A Walk In Central Park " feels like a car ride. It reminds you of a winter evening in the city. There's a disparity in tones which travels, and echos making you feel that effect. "The Cough Killer" opens with a sample in Spanish which makes the instrumental pop up even stronger. "Quiet Exits," the outro track, had a smooth sound and makes you want to run it back.

The kid has talent. Overall, the good tracks echo. Each of the sounds from the pianos, to the drums are smooth and gel. The bad tracks may be miss-arranged and don't have a direction. He does not know if he can turn this into a full-time gig, but he is going to make music regardless. I say its a 7.5 out of 10. As a whole, it is a quality collection of beats, and worth a download.

The album has more than three instrumentals. Download at
